You probably picture some gorgeous place up in the mountains or a soothing ocean breeze at the beach when you hear the word “travel”, right? Although travelling can be just that, there are a lot of mafan things that come with it too!
The hours of waiting at the airport, getting restless thinking about what to pack and of course, the high prices of accommodations. Well, to ease these struggles, we’ve asked a few seasoned Malaysian travellers to share some travel hacks that most of you probably never heard of before.
1. Keep your luggage safe by marking it as fragile
“No extra fees needed!”
“I had holes in my luggage before because my airline didn’t handle them with much care. A literal stranger actually saw me cursing at the baggage reclaiming area and gave me a piece of advice that I still use to this day, “Next time mark your luggage as fragile, bro“.
You know what, it works like a charm! The airline has to be extra careful when handling my bags now! There are no additional fees too!”
– Renu, 25.
2. Relax at the airport lounge at affordable rates
“Feel so atas when you lepak at the airport lounge weh!”
“Coming at least 2 hours before your flight and having most airport seats being occupied means that you have to sit on the floor most of the time! That’s why I find it worth it to spend some money for airport lounge access though admittedly they can be quite expensive.
Actually, you can easily get discounted rates for KLIA lounge access by simply using Grab. You can even release some stress at the KLIA lounge wellness spa for only RM80. There are also 20% discounts on F&B at not just KLIA but other airports too when you use GrabRewards!”
– Adrian Kan, 24.
3. Find a friend that works for an airline company

“OMG up to 90% discount for flight tickets?”
“Airline companies usually give their staff a lot of benefits but not many know to what extent. Well, I’m here to spill some beans. Most will get free airline tickets for their immediate family members and there’s also another benefit programme for friends as well.
Usually, this involves a list of 10 people which needs to be updated every year. A friend of mine put me in his list and now I can get 90% off the airline’s flight tickets at any time and to any of their destinations! The tickets are marked as standby though but I’ve never experienced any trouble boarding my flights. So, my tip is to find yourself an airline crew friend or better yet, boyfriend (or girlfriend)!” 😛
– Sheralyn, 23.
4. Always make sure you get a comfortable ride to the airport
“Be on time and just unwind.”
“You know what’s the most important thing when travelling? The ride to the airport. Most travellers neglect this and end up either being late or being super tired due to the less than ideal mode of transport. Sure, you can save a few Ringgit if you take the bus but it’s super unreliable!
Always use Grab, as you can gain a lot of GrabRewards points with that trip alone! A trip anywhere from Klang Valley to KLIA/KLIA2 will give you up to 800 points weh! You can then straightaway redeem RM10 Grab ride discount when you’re heading back home from the airport after your trip. Plus, if you’re a Platinum member, upgrading to Grabcar plus is free which makes the ride all the more comfortable.”
– Steve Jeremy, 23.
5. Get hotel discounts worldwide through Booking.com and more!
“Seriously, why pay more?”
“Accommodations make up almost half of your travel budget already kan? One way to save is by being a Genius user on Booking.com which gives you 10% discount for every booking. This can be unlocked by booking at least twice with the site.
One hack to instantly get the Genius status is by simply using Grab too. All Platinum Grab members will instantly get Genius status for Booking.com weh! Not only that, but you’ll also get an additional 8% discount when you’re on Booking.com’s promotional site.
Besides that, Platinum Grab members can also redeem their GrabRewards points for discounts when using Klook, OYO Hotels and even cash vouchers for Agoda. It’s quite easy to get Platinum membership too.”
– Tara, 26.
