Well, isn’t this interesting!

The Star reported that Malaysia’s population of men has surpassed the population of women in the first quarter of 2019. According to the Statistics Department, the population of Malaysia now stands at 32.66 million.

FYI, from the above-mentioned statistic, 29.31 million are Malaysians while the rest are non-citizens (3.35 million people).

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin revealed that the male population is now at 16.86 million whereas the female population stands at 15.8 million – meaning there are 1.06 million more men than women. He was quoted as saying,

“The sex ratio remains at 107 males per 100 females.”

On the other hand, Mohd Uzir shared that Selangor has the highest number of residents with 6.54 million people. Conversely, Putrajaya recorded the lowest population in the whole of Malaysia with 92,640 people only.

He further elaborated that Malaysia’s population in the first quarter of 2019 recorded a slight increase of 1.1 per cent compared to the first quarter of last year (2018), when the overall population recorded was 32.29 million.

In addition, Mohd Uzir shared that the population of citizens below the age of 14 has experienced a slight decrease from 7.71 million in 2018 to 7.69 million in 2019.

Having said that, the number of people between 15 and 64 years old (working age) has grown to 22.80 million in 2019 from only 22.51 million last year. Mohd Uzir finally concluded,

“Those 65 and above also increased from 2.07 million to 2.17 million over the same period of time. This trend shows that Malaysia is moving in line with developed countries towards an ageing society.”
